The Essence

Situated in Rojo Park in the old Komatsu castle grounds, the tea room was designed to reflect Soushitsu’s aesthetic in a modern setting, using Komatsu made roof tiles and tatami. The tea garden was made in the tradtional samurai house style.

Discoveries

The tea house was built in the tradtional, austere style by the famous construction company, Nakamura Sotoji. It features two tea rooms, a larger tatami room and the Gen’an which features many designs unique to the Urasenke school of tea ceremony. The adjacent tea garden is designed to reflect the notion of “nine mountains, eight seas”, a poetic expression used to refer to the world. It is said that the traditional stone washbasin found in the garden is an original artefact from the old Komatsu Castle.

Brief history

The fourth Senke clan head, Soshitsu Senso served the third lord of the Kaga domain, Toshitsune Maeda as his master of tea ceremony. When the lord took over Komatsu castle, Soshitsu was presented with a residence within the castle, a great honor in those days. Until Lord Toshitsune’s passing, Soshitsu instructed the ways of tea to everyone from high ranking retainers to commoners. He is considered a key figure in the building of tea culture in the Hokuriku region. In 1997, the Senso Yashiki and Gen’an Tea House was built in commemoration of the 300th anniversary of Soshitsu’s passing. For the past 100 years, a tea ceremony is held every month to celebrate the spirit of the tea.
