We hold many events for visitors to meet with Kogei by trainees, alumni, and faculties such as “Taiken Yokocho” (Make Your Own Work), “Utatsuya Market” and “Art Market”. These are held to connect artists to public.

The Essence
Kogei in Kanazawa trains artists who are associated with the traditional spirit and culture of Kanazawa. Kanazawa Utatsuyama Kogei Kobo is composed with five studios: Ceramics, Urushi, Dyeing, Metalwork and Glass. The ceramic glaze called “Uwae”, a gold lacquer called “Kaga Makie”, and a dyeing called “Kaga Yuzen”, plus a metal inlaid called “Kaga Zogan”, with a glass as new tradition of Kogei in Kanazawa, reveals this tradition. The location of this Kobo is rooted from “Kasugayama-Kiln” — that phrase speaks to the initiative of Kutani revaival and the traditional spirit and culture of Kogei in Kanazawa.
Discoveries
On the first floor of the Exhibition wing, there is a permanent exhibition drawn from the historical archives of “Osaikusho” (Kaga Clan Kobo) to Kogei work in Kanazawa from “Kasugayama-Kiln”. On the second floor at Exhibition wing, there is a temporary exhibition shown by contemporary Kogei work made by a member of lectures and alumni. In the Kobo wing, visitors can meet working trainees through glass window.
Brief history
The Kanazawa Utatsuyama Kogei Kobo conceived as a facility to preserve and develop cultivated kogei (crafts) in Kanazawa and promote cultural activities, was founded in 1989 in commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the founding of Kanazawa. The city is known for its tradition of excellence in kogei, which had developed from the activities of Osaikusho (Kaga clan kobo). While retaining the spirit of its forerunners, the kobo aims to nurture traineeships who have the creativity to respond to changing times. It also strives to continue developing the culture of craftwork through exhibitions and workshops for the public.
Event history for Kogei
Each year, we hold special exhibitions such as “Pouring Vessels – The Beauty Of Overglaze Enamels On Ceramics” (2016), “Dyeing – From Sarasa To Yuzen” (2015), “The 2014 International Exchange Exhibition of Metalwork” (2014), and “Glass ・ Light and Color” (2013). In addition to these special exhibitions, there are more events such as “The Exhibition of Utatsuyama Kogei Kobo’s Trainees” at 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, “Kobo Festival”, and “Utatsuyama Tea Ceremony”.
