The Essence

The golden storehouse stands at the back of our shop in the courtyard. We brought a more than 100 years old traditional Japanese storehouse back to life as an unprecedented storehouse with the reliable traditional skills and techniques of traditional plasterers and gold leaf production. The exterior walls were redone as plastered walls and were finished with The eternal color: Pure gold & platinum gold leaf. The interior walls have a gradation created with a mixture of the dirt used for the original walls and pasty indigo from Okinawa covered with 24K pure gold leaf. In this new attempt, we collaborated with Mr. Syuhei Hasado, a certified plasterer who is active not only in Japan but around the world.
* The surface of the exterior walls was not coated in order to enable visitors to directly enjoy the charms of gold leaf.
Since the building was opened to the public in 2004, no renovation or repair work has been done.

Discoveries

Our shop is in a traditional teahouse building located roughly in the middle of the Higashi Chayagai district. In the space with a quaint atmosphere inside this more than 100 years old building, we convey the charms of our original gold leaf created by mixing pure gold and pure platinum gold, pure gold & platinum gold leaf, as HAKUHIN items for today’s lifestyles including dishes, bowls, cups, jewelry, and bags. The golden storehouse that stands at the back of the shop in the courtyard is a must-see. We also offer craft activities for experiencing and enjoying gold leaf at HAKUZA Keikodokoro (reservation required).
* This shop opened in April 2004.
HAKUHIN: We pursue the innate, infinite strengths and beauties of gold leaf. One by one and with great care, we create gold leaf items that feature expressions unique to gold leaf. We have named these gold leaf items HAKUHIN.

Brief history

The company and brand name HAKUZA was taken from an actual regulatory body of gold and silver leaf items called Hakuza that once existed during the long history of gold leaf production and use in Japan. In the space with a quaint atmosphere inside the HAKUZA Hikarigura, a building more than 100 years old, we offer HAKUHIN, or our unique gold leaf items, for today’s lifestyles including dishes, bowls, cups, jewelry, and bags made with our original pure gold & platinum gold leaf.

We offer numerous HAKUHIN items full of new and unique charms of gold leaf.
Our original pure gold & platinum gold leaf was developed from a new perspective on gold leaf production –– to make a mixed gold leaf by combining pure gold and platinum gold.
Using this mixed gold leaf while making the best use of its beauty and charms, we create HAKUHIN items with grate care.
HAKUHIN items will make you want to own them, wear them, or give them to someone special.
We have a fresh and modern lineup of items that change the conventional concept of gold leaf.
